Phelps 8 for 8
By Michael_Phelps | August 28, 2008
BEIJING – Olympic history has been made and fans holding signs reading “Phelps 8 for 8” were not disappointed. In what would seem to many an impossible feat became a reality this Sunday when Michael Phelps went an unbelievable 8 for 8 with 8 gold medals in Men’s Swimming.
The final medal came in the Men’s 4×100 Medley Relay in which Phelps swam the butterfly leg of this highly anticipated race. Not only was Phelps and the rest of the American team able to capture gold but they also set a new world-record.
World records were nothing new to Phelps when he completed his 8 for 8 sweep in Beijing. In this year’s Olympic Games Phelps set 7 world records (see figure 1-1 below), recording a world record in all of his races except the 100 meter butterfly, where he only set the Olympic Gold Record. Ironically the same style and distance he swam in his final race as part of the relay team.

Although the American team was the heavy favorite, the pressure was on as not just fans but other Olympians gathered to watch history. Some speculated that the pressure might create a distraction to some swimmers but, Jason Lezak said quite the opposite. Remarked Lezak, “I looked up and I saw Kobe and LeBron, the best basketball players in the world, and I love basketball…I thought there’s no way I was going to let those guys down.”
The rest of Phelps’ teammates were not only excited to win gold but to be a part of his history. Teammate Brendan Hansen believes that Phelps’ 8 for 8 run was the greatest achievement in sports adding “Every single athlete in the world right now needs to tip their hat to Michael Phelps because what he did this week was amazing.”
As the gentleman that Michael Phelps is, he didn’t waste any time praising his fellow American teammates.
“It wouldn’t have been possible without the help of my teammates.” Phelps said. “For the three Olympics I’ve been a part of, this is by far the closest men’s team that we’ve ever had. I didn’t know everybody coming into this Olympics, but I feel going out I know every single person very well. The team that we had is the difference.”
There’s no doubt that for spectators Michael Phelps’ 8 for 8 run will go down as one of the most impressive displays of athleticism we’ve ever seen. As for Phelps, he put it best saying that the 2008 Beijing Olympics was “The best week of my life.”

Olympic Gold Record
By Michael_Phelps | August 15, 2008
Today Michael Phelps won his sixth Men’s Gold as he continues his quest to top current Gold Medal record holder, Mark Spitz (pictured below). Phelps currently is six for six in his first six races, capturing Olympic Gold in every race he has swum. Much like other Gold Medal Winners, Phelps’ diet is something that most people couldn’t even image was possible. A Phelps morning breakfast sounds a little bit more like a breakfast for four.

Mark Spitz looks like Borat! I LIKE.
According to Phelps, his day starts with three fried egg sandwiches with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayo, one five egg omelet, a bowl of grits, three slices of French toast with powdered sugar, three chocolate chip pancakes and two cups of coffee. This all before 10:00am. Many would say that this is enough food for an entire day but for the gold medal winner it’s simply a portion of his 12,000 calorie a day diet while training.
For Lunch Phelps eats one pound of pasta with tomato sauce, two large ham and cheese sandwiches, with mayo of course, on white bread and washes it all down with a collection of energy drinks that add up to 1,000 calories.
Then comes dinner. What may seem modest compared to his breakfast and lunch menu is still something that would make the common man explode. He warms up with six to eight slices of pizza, then has another pound of pasta with tomato sauce accompanied by another 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks.
Although that diet is enough to make the average man’s heart stop, Phelps needs it to keep up with his work ethic. The six foot four inch swimmer works out five solid hours a day needing a high enough calorie and carbohydrate count to keep him moving. Not every Olympic Athlete needs such a high count as Phelps but then again, not every athlete is Michael Phelps.
After taking his 11th Olympic Gold Medal Phelps said, “Eat, sleep and swim, that’s all I can do.” If he’s as good at sleeping as he is at eating and swimming, he’ll definitely be well rested as he chases the record.

Olympic Gold and World Records!
By Michael_Phelps | August 14, 2008
Olympic Gold Record is all about Michael Phelps and the rest of the USA Men’s Gold Olympic Swimming Team and his miraculous journey to Men’s Gold! Phelps was relentless in all of the events he competed in, which included screaming cheers of encouragement towards the rest of his men’s 4×100-meter free style relay final. Jason Lezak anchored team USA and edged out France’s Alain Bernard who publicly called out USA swimming in a highly popular newspaper. The squad crushed the Olympic Gold world record by more than 4 seconds, leaving the competition in it’s wake, literally. The gold medal was one of three medals won by American swimmers Monday including four world records on the day. Good luck to all countries involved in the Olympics! May the best country win the most Olympic Gold medals!
